It was a memorable moment for the people of Ikot Ebidang Village in ONNA Local Government Area on saturday 25th March 2017 as they received a delegation of Federated ONNA students of Nigeria (FOSON) University Of Uyo Chapter ably led by the President Rtr. Jerry Williams, for a clean up exercise as part of Students Volunteer campaign; a selfless humanitarian oriented initiative brought by the chapter.
Receiving the Students was the Youth Leader of the community,
Mr. Friday Eshiet whom in his Welcome address thanked the leadership of the team for initiating such an innovative initiative and for choosing Ikot Ebidang Village for the exercise amongst other villages. He however added that the Youths of the community will be in earnest cooperation with the students through out the exercise. Furthermore, the delegation moved to the Royal compound of Obong (Engr.) Sunny Udonsek; the obong Uforo 1 Of Ibibio Land whom was waiting with agog of anticipation to welcome the Students on behalf of the Village in it entirety.
In his speech, he applauded the delegation for visiting his Village on a such humanitarian purpose which he considered "rare" in today's society. He admonished the youths of the community to emulate the good deeds of the students in line with the dakada philosophy Of Deac. Udom G. Emmanuel, the Executive Governor of Akwa IBom state. He however ended by assuring the team of his partnership in subsequent projects towards grass root development in ONNA local government Area. The village council, under the leadership of the just established caretaker committee of the village, led by Obong Friday Udonsek, thanked the team for finding time to identify with the village and also urged the students to continue in their good deeds. According to the leader of the committee, "it is a welcoming development for students to always search for what to do for community instead of always expecting from the community". He pleaded with the students as a father to shun cultism and criminal acts and advised them to face their studies with all diligence. He also prayed God to always be with the students in their academic pursuits.
Responding on behalf of the team, the Leader of the team Rtr. Jerry Williams expressed appreciation to Chief (Engr) Sunny Udonsek and the entire leadership of the village for their warm welcome, words of advice and encouragement. He further made it known that the Students Volunteerism Movement is an initiative coined by Students Of ONNA extraction in the university of Uyo to awaken self consciousness of youths and students of ONNA while reminding them of their fundamental social responsibilities towards community advancement through selfless humanitarian services imbibe with dakada philosophy.
According to him "We do not only go for sanitation and cleanups, we also maintain public facilities, renovate and refurbish public buildings like town halls, schools and health centres" he however pleaded with the youths of the village to key into the DAKKADA philosophy and rise to the challenge of building capacity in no small measure to the development of the grass root. In attendance, from the leadership of FOSON were: the auditor general, FOSON Worldwide Comr. Victor Akpan, The director of information one, Snr Comr. Jerry Johnny; the director of information two, Comr. Joseph Ekpo, The Auditor General Comr. Anietie Nkanang and many others.
